Smith Young is an independent Property Consultancy specialising in the leasing, management and lease consultancy of major shopping centres.

History

ORIGIN
Established in 1990, Smith Young was appointed as development consultant and subsequently sole leasing and managing agent for the Meadowhall Regional Shopping Centre, Sheffield – one of the largest and most successful shopping centres in UK history.

In 1995 Smith Young negotiated and concluded all first phase rent reviews at Meadowhall, more than doubling rental income in the process.

In 1999 Smith Young handled the sale of Meadowhall to British Land for £1.17 billion, at that time the largest ever single property transaction in the UK. Following the sale, we were retained by the new owners as sole leasing, management and rent review agents, and we continue to act in these capacities.

DIVERSIFICATION
Rent Review
— Capitalising upon our expertise and pro-active approach, we were appointed by Lend Lease in 2001 to advise upon and negotiate the first phase of rent reviews at Bluewater, widely regarded as the UK’s premier shopping and leisure destination. This was followed by appointments on Trafford Centre, Manchester, Bull Ring, Birmingham, Touchwood, Solihull and more recently Oracle, Reading. In 2005 our success was recognised with the award of  ‘Professional Agency team of the Year ‘at the Property Week Awards.

Leasing — In 2007 Smith Young was appointed as joint leasing agent at St Stephens, Hull by JV partners ING and British Land. Our work at Meadowhall and St Stephens has seen Smith Young awarded ‘deal of the year’ in 2008 and 2009 and named British Land Agent of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010

Management — Smith Young has a wealth of experience in the management of major shopping centres in the UK (Meadowhall) and in Europe (Centro, Oberhausen). Our pro-active approach to property management, financial excellence, innovation and partnership with clients, suppliers and customers culminated in our being named ‘Managing Agent of the Year 2010’ at the Sceptre Awards.

The Future — We have developed a management, leasing and lease consultancy service which is simply best in class. Because we specialise only in Shopping Centres, we are best placed to offer owners a fully comprehensive service which is scalable and adaptable to suit the individual requirements of our clients and their schemes.
